G. Skaistė: “US Congress vote on the weekend is vital for Ukraine”

As Congress votes for an almost USD 61 billion aid package on the weekend, Minister of Finance Gintarė Skaistė, who is currently visiting Washington D.C, had meetings with Democratic Party Members of Congress Mike Quigley and Chrissy Houlahan. At the meetings, in addition to the need to invest in Ukraine, as guarantor of the region's security, the need to expand sanctions against russia and its confederate Belarus, through which prohibited goods reach the aggressor, have been discussed.

“We hope that on the weekend the U.S. Congress will decide to support Ukraine fighting against the aggressor, which not only defends itself from the occupant, but also fights for a democratic world. For this purpose, the Western partners’ financial and military aid package is vital, in particular military aid, which forms a significant part of the package”, stressed Minister of Finance G. Skaistė.

At the meetings with the Members of Congress, the Minister also emphasised the need to strengthen sanctions, to ensure more effective their implementation and to expand the scope of the sanctioning regime not only to russia, but also to Belarus.

“Together with Western partners, we must continue to strengthen sanctions against the aggressor russia and its confederate Belarus. Special attention should be paid to the effective implementation of sanctions, preventing any their circumvention. In this regard, the harmonisation of the sanctioning regime between russia and Belarus is crucial. We need to further increase pressure and to reduce the aggressor’s ability to wage war and to receive goods restricted by sanctions through related regimes”, said Minister G. Skaistė.

Members of US Congress Mike Quigley and Chrissy Houlahan are the members of the Democratic Party and are among the most active supporters of Ukraine. Since the beginning of the war, Congressman M. Quigley has visited Ukraine six times and has been actively gathering support for Ukraine fighting against the occupant, while a Member of Congress, Air Force Veteran Ch. Houlahan – actively advocates for strengthening the defence of the Nordic countries, rotation of US troops in the region and Lithuania.
