Vilnius, 19 October. Yesterday the Minister of Finance of the Republic of Lithuania Rimantas Šadžius met with the Vice President of the World Bank Phillipe Le Houerou. The Minister of Finance presented Lithuania’s membership application to the International Development Association (IDA).

On 18-22 October 2007 Mr. R. Šadžius participates at the Annual Meeting of the Boards of Governors of the World Bank Group (WB) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Washington D.C.

“Lithuania strives to become a member of the International Development Association and intends to join other countries that contribute to providing the support to developing countries. We are ready to share experience gained and together with other donor countries to be active in participation in the activities of the organization,” – said the Minister of Finance presenting the application.

“It’s our pleasure to accept new members to the family of donors to the International Development Association. This event is of importance not only for Lithuania, but also for the World Bank. We appreciate Lithuania’s progress and successful experience, which will be a significant contribution to the implementation of IDA’s goals in the less developed countries,” – commented the Vice President of the World Bank.

After joining the International Development Association, Lithuania will contribute to the support that IDA gives to 82 poorest countries in the world, of which 39 are in Africa. The status of donor country would help Lithuania to get involved in the implementation of objectives of multilateral developmental cooperation policy and to enhance the country’s role in global politics.
