R. Šadžius discussed topical issues on the EU agenda with the Minister of Finance of Poland

Minister of Finance Rimantas Šadžius, who is on an official visit to Warsaw, met with Minister of Finance of Poland Andrzej Domański and discussed topical issues on the EU agenda during the Polish Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

"Europe is currently facing many challenges, therefore, we can welcome the priorities highlighted by the Polish Presidency of the Council of the EU, among which the most important for Lithuania are strengthening the EU’s defence capabilities, ensuring support for Ukraine and strengthening sanctions against Russia, focusing on competitiveness and preparing for the upcoming negotiations on the EU’s multiannual financial framework. It is important that these issues remain at the top of the list of priorities in the Council of the EU,” R. Šadžius said.

At the meeting, the Minister stressed that as Russia’s war against Ukraine continues, the EU must further strengthen sanctions against Russia, including measures against the Russian shadow fleet, a total ban on liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports, broader restrictions on dual-use goods, as well as additional sanctions against the Russian financial sector, and minimise the aggressor’s ability to finance the hostilities.

The Minister noted that there is an urgent need to consider all possible ways to increase investment in defence, including the creation of a joint borrowing mechanism, as well as increasing the role of the European Investment Bank (EIB) in investing in projects to strengthen security and defence.

Further financial and military support to Ukraine was also discussed at the meeting. While an agreement has now been reached at G7 level on a USD 50 billion (EUR 45 billion) loan to Ukraine, the repayment of which will use profits from Russia’s frozen assets, and other envisaged measures cover Ukraine’s external financing needs for 2025, there is a need for continuous monitoring of the situation in Ukraine and, if necessary, for urgent additional action.
