At the meeting with the President of the World Bank – issues on support to Ukraine and creation of the enabling working environment in developing countries
On April 29-30, Minister of Finance Kristupas Vaitiekūnas will visit Reykjavik, Iceland, where he will attend the meeting of the World Bank Nordic and Baltic Governors with WB President Ajay Banga. The focus will be on further support to Ukraine and strengthening the enabling environment through the creation of sustainable jobs in developing countries.
“The key message to the President of the World Bank is to continue the World Bank’s support to Ukraine, which Lithuania fully supports. Coordinated efforts by all international partners will be crucial to ensure Ukraine’s long-term resilience, stability and prosperity, and the involvement of the World Bank on this issue has been essential from the outset, not only through financial assistance, but also through strategic and coordinated support to Ukraine”, Minister of Finance Kristupas Vaitiekūnas said before his visit to Reykjavik.
The meeting will discuss the establishment of the Second Special Programme for Ukraine under the International Development Association. Lithuania, together with other Nordic and Baltic countries, strongly advocated and supported the First Programme in 2023, which successfully increased USD 2 billion donor contributions up to USD 6 billion funding for Ukraine. According to the Minister, Lithuania is ready to contribute again to this instrument, as support to Ukraine through the World Bank is effective and provides the basis for priority setting and donor coordination, also supports Ukraine's reform agenda in line with its EU accession track. In total, USD 89 billion in financial support has already been provided to Ukraine through the WB.
The meeting also will discuss the enabling environment in order to create sustainable jobs. "Lithuania agrees that, given the scale of demographic pressures in developing countries, access to decent work opportunities, especially for young people, contributes to creating viable economic conditions at home and mitigating migration factors related to economic causes and instability”, K. Vaitiekūnas said.
