EUR 40 million investment to strengthen the rule of law in Lithuania

The closing event of the European Economic Area (EEA) and Norway Grants financial mechanisms programme “Justice and Home Affairs” took place in Kaunas. Over EUR 40 million were invested in this programme in 2014–2021, and the programme projects were implemented by the Police Department, the Lithuanian Prison Service, the Prosecutor General's Office, and the National Courts Administration.

The largest share of funding, almost EUR 17 million, was allocated to the project "Improvement of the Quality of the Lithuanian Penal Enforcement System" implemented by the Lithuanian Prison Service. During the project, a staff training centre was established in Antaviliai, 3 halfway houses were set up, and staff and officers of Vilnius Correctional Facility and Pravieniškės Correctional Facility acquired practical skills during internships.

During the event, the projects implemented were presented in more detail, the participants were greeted by the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Norway to Lithuania, Atle Konta Midttun, and officials from both Lithuanian and Norwegian responsible institutions participated in the discussions.

The day after the conference, its participants will visit Kaunas District Court and the halfway house in Domeikava.
