Experts from the International Monetary Fund started an assessment of Lithuania's economic situation

Head of the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) mission to Lithuania, Ms Kazuko Shiron and IMF experts will visit Lithuania on 13-26 May to analyse the country's economic situation. The representatives of the Fund will examine fiscal policy, taxation, State budget planning and implementation areas, discuss the issues of competitiveness, productivity, green transformation and energy independence, digitalisation, health, social protection and labour, education and other issues.

The IMF carries out continuous surveillance and makes recommendations to achieve and maintain financial stability in the country. During the mission, which takes place under Article IV of the IMF Articles of Agreement, IMF representatives will meet with the representatives of the Ministry of Finance, the Bank of Lithuania, as well as the representatives of the Government, the Seimas, the President’s Office, the National Audit Office, the Competition Council, the National Development Bank ILTE, various ministries and other state institutions, social partners and private sector representatives. Lithuania cooperates intensively with the Fund in all spheres of its competence. To curb the shadow economy and to improve tax administration, the agreement was also signed last year with the IMF for technical assistance to the country to reduce its value added tax (VAT) gap.

“Lithuania’s economy is constantly facing a wide range of challenges, starting from the need to increase defence capabilities to the effects of the Middle East conflict in the field of energy. Uncertainty remains high and, in the long term, we also need to address structural challenges such as an ageing society and a shrinking workforce, which will make it even more difficult to keep the economy on the growth track and ensure sustainable finance. Therefore, the analysis and insights of the International Monetary Fund are extremely valuable in making future decisions”, Minister of Finance Kristupas Vaitiekūnas said welcoming the representatives of the IMF mission to Lithuania.
