In Warsaw K. Vaitiekūnas will meet the Minister of Finance of Poland to discuss the expansion of Polish banks in Lithuania

Tomorrow, on 19 December, in Warsaw Minister of Finance Kristupas Vaitiekūnas will meet Minister of Finance of Poland Andrzej Domański. The meeting intends to discuss the key issues related to the opportunities for expansion of Polish banks in Lithuania, also the assurance of sustainable and continuous financial support to Ukraine for the victory over the aggressor.

According to the Minister of Finance, Lithuania strongly supports the EU initiative to provide sustainable financial support to Ukraine using frozen Russian assets. Lithuania welcomes the progress in implementation of the Reparations Loan model based on immobilised Russian assets. Currently, this model is considered to be the most rational alternative allowing to ensure a rapid and sustainable support to Ukraine without any additional burden on the budgets of the EU Member States.

Minister K. Vaitiekūnas also welcomes the strengthening of links between the financial markets of Lithuania and Poland culminating in the decision of the PKO Bank Polski to open a representative office in Vilnius. This is seen as an important first step in enhancing competition in the banking sector in Lithuania with currently dominating three market participants holding 76.4 % of the market.

“Increasing business cooperation between Poland and Lithuania creates a need for specialised financial services. The entry of Polish banks would not only serve the business, but also further strengthen the economic partnership between our countries”, Minister K. Vaitiekūnas emphasises.

At the meeting, the Minister will invite Polish financial market participants to consider various forms of activities in Lithuania – from opening the branches of the banks to acquisition of a full banking license– and to take advantage of the opportunities provided by the dynamic Lithuanian financial market.
