K. Vaitiekūnas: additional EUR 151 million for medium-range air defence and indirect fire support systems

The Government approved the draft Resolution submitted by the Ministry of Finance proposing to allocate additional EUR 151.2 million from borrowed funds this year for the priority development of defence capabilities. These funds would be channelled to advance payments of the Ministry of National Defence (MoND) for medium-range air defence and indirect fire support systems.

“This allocation is the last one financed from the State borrowing limit increased by EUR 800 million when reviewing the last year’s budget. In the event of specific needs, we could promptly allocate additional funds for national defence purposes”, Minister of Finance Kristupas Vaitiekūnas says. 

The funds are proposed to be allocated considering the MoND letter of 4 November 2025 noting that in Q IV the ministry has to allocate EUR 151.2 million in advance payments for medium-range air defence and indirect fire support systems.

According to the Minister of Finance, these additional allocations for defence allow ensure the vital development of defence capabilities. In total, including the budget appropriations for the MoND and this additional EUR 800 million from borrowed funds, approximately 4.1 % of GDP will be allocated for defence.  

The first allocation from the borrowing limit of EUR 800 million was made to the MoND in April – EUR 187.7 million for engineering infantry fighting vehicles and medium-range air defence systems, in August – EUR 461.1 million for advance payments for tanks.
