K. Vaitiekūnas for Ukrainian media: Lithuania strongly supports Ukraine's goal to become an EU member by 2030

In an interview with Ukrainform journalist Ievgen Matiushenko in Brussels, Minister of Finance Kristupas Vaitiekūnas stressed Lithuania's firm position that Ukraine must become a full member of the European Union by 2030 or even earlier.

When asked whether Lithuania would support the EU integration plan proposed by the European Commission in several stages, the Minister of Finance responded that the most important thing is that Ukraine does not remain a permanent member of the EU on the waiting list. "Ukraine needs to become a full member of the EU. However, if there is a possibility to move in stages towards this and if it helps to speed up the integration process, if it sets intermediate goals that Ukraine could achieve and this would give Ukrainians more confidence, we will support it," K. Vaitiekūnas said.

The interview also focused on financial support, the fight against corruption, Ukraine's contribution to European competitiveness, including agriculture, Lithuania-Ukraine economic relations and investment potential, Ukraine's reconstruction, energy independence from Russia and lessons for the whole of Europe. He also stressed the need to further tighten sanctions against Russia and Belarus in order to effectively weaken the aggressor's economy.
