Lithuania and 10 other EU countries signed a joint declaration on the future of Cohesion Policy after 2027
Vice-Minister of Finance Vaida Česnulevičiūtė-Markevičienė participated in the meeting of Ministers responsible for Cohesion Policy held in Prague (Czech Republic), the axis of which was the importance of Cohesion Policy in promoting balanced economic, social and territorial cohesion across the European Union (EU). At the meeting, Lithuania together with 10 other EU countries signed a joint declaration on the future of Cohesion Policy after 2027.
"EU investment must address the fundamental and most important cohesion challenges of the Member States, while at the same time it must be flexible enough to cope with the rapid changes that are taking place around us. In this declaration, we have enshrined the specificities of border countries and the challenges that need to be addressed. The priority of the Cohesion Funds should be investment, which should allow regions to find new growth opportunities,” Vice-Minister of Finance V. Česnulevičiūtė-Markevičienė stressed.
According to the Vice-Minister, the new programming period for Cohesion Policy seems to be far away, but there is an increasing discussion in various formats about what this period should look like in the future, what challenges should be tackled first, so that its benefits would be felt by every citizen.
In Prague, experts from 11 countries from Lithuania, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Poland, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia discussed intensively what is most important for each country, and what is common to all countries was enshrined in the declaration.
During the meeting, the joint declaration on the future of Cohesion Policy after 2027 was signed.
“It is important that the regions cooperate and share their best practices with each other, contributing to the strategic autonomy of the EU. The regions must be not passive observers, and the Member States that will be able to offer decisions or competences that determine the EU autonomy, resilience and global European advantage will be the most successful ones,” the Vice-Minister of Finance said.
EU Commissioner for Cohesion and Reforms Elisa Ferreira also attended the meeting together with ministers.
