Minister of Finance at a meeting with the Ambassador of the United Kingdom: "We strive for broad cooperation with our strategic partners"
Today, Minister of Finance Taurimas Valys met with Ambassador of the United Kingdom (UK) to Lithuania Liz Boyles to discuss the economic situation of the countries, the importance of defence funding and further support to Ukraine.
“There are around 300,000 Lithuanians living in the UK, one of the largest Lithuanian communities in the world, so we highly value our strategic partnership and look forward to close cooperation in areas ranging from security and defence to high-tech,” T. Valys said at the meeting.
However, the topic of security and defence funding was one of the key issues in this meeting. The Minister of Finance shared with the Ambassador Lithuania's plans to continue actively investing in defence and strengthening resilience by devoting at least 5% of GDP to defence, discussed the contribution of international financial institutions to strengthening Lithuania's resilience as the EU's eastern border, discussed new defence initiatives being developed by the United Kingdom.
At the meeting, the geopolitical challenges affecting the economies of the countries and continued support for Ukraine defending itself against the Russian aggression were also discussed.
“I would like to underline that financial, military and political support for Ukraine is a top priority for our government and we are determined to support Ukraine for as long as it takes. This will be one of the key priorities of the Lithuanian Presidency of the Council of the EU", the Minister of Finance assured. In the Minister’s view, in order to provide continued and timely support to Ukraine, the supporting countries need to return to discussions on using frozen Russian assets as one of the sources of funding to meet Ukraine’s needs post-2027.
