Minister of Finance G. Skaistė’s visit to the seaside: European Union’s investment in regions – for culture and defence
Today, Minister of Finance Gintarė Skaistė visited Palanga and Šventoji, where had a meeting with Palanga leaders and paid on-site visits to the projects implemented from the European Union (EU) investment, namely, Port in Šventoji, Concert Hall in Palanga and Museum of Jonas Šliūpas. In the new EU financing period, Klaipėda region will receive almost EUR 200 million and Palanga Municipality - almost EUR 20 million of investment.
”The EU investment gave us all opportunities to achieve a qualitative breakthrough in strengthening our regions. Compared to the previous EU investment perspective, regions will receive significantly higher investment. In the period 2014-2020, about EUR 972 million of EU Funds’ resources were allocated to projects planned by regions. In the new perspective, more than EUR 1.6 billion of the EU Structural Funds’ resources have been allocated to municipal projects. We see how the EU investment changes the entire seaside region, especially Palanga, as well as Šventoji with targeted and effective investment in the fields of culture, education and tourism”, – states Minister of Finance G. Skaistė.
During the visit to the Port in Šventoji, the Minister was presented the vision that after installing piers with quays, the services of this Port could be used by the transport servicing the Terminal of Būtingė. In addition, part of the quay could be used for military needs, what is especially important in today's geopolitical situation. The Port could also be used to service the future wind farm in the Baltic Sea. There is no doubt that the refurbished Port would promote tourism. Moreover, a sailing school is also planned to be established in the Port.
In the Museum of Jonas Šliūpas which has been renovated from the EU investment, Minister of Finance G. Skaistė viewed the paintings by world-famous artist Kazys Varnelis and textile articles from various regions of Lithuania. At the end of the 19th century, in the villa built by the Counts Tiškevičiai, the museum of Palanga burgomaster Jonas Šliūpas was established in 1989. In November, it reopened its doors to visitors after reconstruction. During the project, exterior renovation works of the building were carried out by implementing energy saving measures.
Palanga Municipality can boast a Concert Hall renovated with the help of the EU investment, where Maestro Stasys Povilaitis started his career. The Hall has 2,200 seats. The most distinctive feature of this concert area is the digitalised electroacoustic system, which changes the sound of the Hall according to the required music genre. The building, which resembles a screw-in musical box, is adapted for concerts, conferences and other events.
Other objects popular with both locals and tourists have also been renovated with the EU funds in Palanga: reconstructed Meilės Avenue, bicycle paths, Botanical Park, etc.
