The Minister of Finance, on the occasion of commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Nordic Investment Bank, underlines the importance of strategic partnership in strengthening resilience of the region

On the occasion of commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Nordic Investment Bank (NIB), Minister of Finance Taurimas Valys highlighted the Bank's contribution to the transformation of Lithuania's economy, the development of strategic infrastructure and its growing role in funding resilience and security of the country and the region.

Over the past five decades, the NIB has become one of the most important financial institutions in the Nordic and Baltic region contributing to infrastructure, energy, innovation and regional resilience. The Bank has been operating in Lithuania since 1994 and has since financed more than 135 projects allocating for them more than EUR 2 billion. In recent years, this cooperation has further strengthened: in 2025 alone, 5 loan agreements were signed for projects with a total value of EUR 556 million implemented in Lithuania.

We would like to sincerely thank the Nordic Investment Bank for its long-standing close cooperation, funding and invaluable technical expertise. In our view, it is crucial that international financial institutions such as the NIB are able to act counter-cyclically by replenishing countries’ financial resources precisely when they are most needed”, Minister of Finance T. Valys said at the meeting with NIB President André Küüsvek.

According to the Minister, the NIB significantly contributed to the development and energy transformation of Lithuania by funding strategic projects such as the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Terminal, gas transmission infrastructure, electricity transmission networks and the development of renewable energy. An example of this are contracts signed in 2025: EUR 40 million loan for Ignitis Group for wind farm in Kelmė district and EUR 64 million loan for Green Genius solar parks and battery storage systems.

At the meeting on 1 September this year, the NIB Board of Directors approved the updated strategy focused on three key areas: competitiveness, sustainability and resilience. The latter area is particularly important to Lithuania, as the Bank is increasingly contributing to the strengthening of security and critical infrastructure.

Regarding the NIB's new mandate to strengthen security and resilience, we are grateful that the Bank responded promptly to our needs and provided a credit line of EUR 400 million for investments in the Lithuanian National Defence System for the period 2025-2028. These funds are crucial for the rapid strengthening of our country's defence capabilities”, Minister of Finance emphasised.

The Minister also highlighted the role of the NIB in strengthening the national development institution ILTE. The Bank’s investment of EUR 31.2 million in the first EUR 112 million green securitisation transaction “Vytis Reno Loans” (for modernisation of multi-apartment buildings) has been a guarantee of success. These were the first green bonds listed in the Baltic states, which received the highest AAA credit rating. According to the Minister of Finance, this cooperation is an excellent example of how the NIB effectively contributes to the development of the Lithuanian capital market.

Please note: The Nordic Investment Bank (NIB) is an international financial institution established in 1975 by Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Norway and Iceland. Since 1 January 2005, three Baltic states, i.e. Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, have also become the members of the Bank.

The NIB’s main objective is to provide long-term loans and guarantees for investment projects that contribute to strengthening the competitiveness of the Nordic and Baltic states and protection of environment. Projects must comply with the Bank's credit policy, environmental and social requirements. Funding is focused on environment, energy, transport, communication, research and development.
