Vice-Minister of Finance: as long as the Ukrainians don’t get tired of fighting, we have no reason to get tired of helping them

“Western countries should do more in helping the Ukraine and to limit russia’s ability to finance the war by tougher sanctions. As long as the Ukrainians don’t get tired of fighting, we have no reason to get tired of helping them”, stressed Vice-Minister Mindaugas Liutvinskas to international media representatives from Politico and Global Capital during his visit to Washington, D.C.

According to the Vice-Minister, the efforts should be made that the EU’s 15th package of sanctions on russia include additional measures covering energy, financial and other sectors, dual-use goods. It is also important to ensure the coherence of sanctions regimes between Western partners and to prevent their circumvention channels.

“We can do more by sanctioning the energy sector. This includes the liquified natural gas (LNG) trade and other steps, including the revision of the oil price cap and increased efficiency of its application. Oil exports remain to be the basic income source of the russian regime enabling financing of the war against the Ukraine. We also must find solutions for tighter sanctioning of the russian financial sector”, said Mr M. Liutvinskas.

The interview also touched upon the USD 50 billion loan package to the Ukraine finally approved by the G7 countries, including the EU, on 25 October, which will be repaid from revenue from frozen russian assets and will cover the country’s financing needs for 2025.
