At the meeting with the Minister of Finance of Ukraine in Washington, D.C., Rimantas Šadžius assured: “We were and will be together until the victory and afterwards”

On 25 April, in Washington, D.C., Minister of Finance Rimantas Šadžius had a meeting with Minister of Finance of Ukraine Sergii Marchenko and discussed the macroeconomic situation in the country, the progress of reconstruction projects and Ukraine's financing needs.

“First of all, I would like to emphasise once again – we will support Ukraine both financially and politically– so far as necessary. Not only until Ukraine’s victory, but also afterwards – our main concern is that your country’s reconstruction projects run as smoothly and quickly as possible”, R. Šadžius stressed.

The Minister emphasised that Lithuania has so far provided more than EUR 1.6 billion in humanitarian, financial and military support to Ukraine. In order to maintain Lithuania’s involvement in Ukraine’s recovery and reconstruction projects, an additional EUR 13 million was allocated to the Lithuanian Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Aid Fund in 2024. These funds are intended for projects in Ukraine and for attracting other donors.

During the meeting, the Minister presented the Guidelines for Lithuania's Involvement in Ukraine's Reconstruction and Recovery 2024-2027. The aim of the Guidelines is to ensure the consistent involvement of Lithuanian institutions, business and non-governmental organisations in the reconstruction of Ukraine by identifying priority areas and envisaged ways of action. Priorities include strong institutions, quality and safe education, rehabilitation and reintegration of soldiers and strengthening the stability and resilience of Ukraine’s economy.

The Minister was delighted that a number of projects has already been implemented. The work is also ongoing on a standard technical construction project "Future Schools in Ukraine" with integrated bomb shelters and a programme to modernise the rehabilitation of wounded Ukrainian soldiers in order to facilitate their return to social life. Moreover, Lithuania, together with Denmark and Sweden, is implementing the Ukraine2EU, which aims to help Ukraine prepare for the EU membership.

During the meeting, the ministers also discussed Ukraine's financial needs for the current and next year, as well as prospects for financial instruments of the IMF and the European Union support to Ukraine.

During his visit to Washington, D.C., R. Šadžius also participated in the Ukraine’s round- table discussion on Ukraine's economic and public finance situation, the issues of the implementation of reforms and the mobilisation of further support to Ukraine. The Minister also discussed these issues at other meetings with representatives of the World Bank and the IMF.
