Denunciation of the Lithuanian Customs Cooperation Agreement with Belarus
Today, the Seimas adopted the Law on the Denunciation of the Lithuanian Customs Cooperation Agreement with Belarus, which was concluded before the start of russia’s large-scale military aggression against Ukraine.
“As the unprecedented military aggression of russia and its accomplice Belarus against Ukraine continues and cross-border trade and economic relations are completely suspended and impossible with this state, it is expedient to denounce the agreement”, Minister of Finance Gintarė Skaistė states.
Since the beginning of russia’s military aggression against Ukraine, the Lithuanian Customs authorities have virtually no cooperation or exchange of information with the Belarusian Customs service. The bilateral agreements on cooperation and mutual assistance in customs matters concluded by the Government prior to Lithuania's accession to the European Union also have no greater practical value, as cooperation in the area of customs union falls under the exclusive competence of the EU.
In accordance with the Agreement with Belarus, each Party may terminate this Agreement by transmitting a note to the other Party through diplomatic channels. In such a case, this Agreement shall cease to have effect six months after the date of receipt of such note by the other party.
