Eurogroup meeting: discussions on strengthening Europe's resilience in the environment of geopolitical challenges
On 19-20 September, Vice-Minister of Finance Kristupas Vaitiekūnas will participate in the meetings of the Eurogroup (EG) and the Council of Ministers for Economic and Financial Affairs of the European Union (EU) (ECOFIN) in Copenhagen (Denmark), where the main focus will be on discussions on the impact of geopolitical challenges on the European economy and measures to strengthen its resilience.
The informal Eurogroup meeting will discuss the latest economic trends and the Eurogroup work programme until mid-2026 and will provide an overview of the development of the digital euro project.
The ECOFIN meeting will focus on financial regulatory simplification and national structural reforms to increase economic resilience and productivity. The greatest attention will be paid to the impact of geopolitical challenges on Europe and the necessary measures to strengthen Europe's position in the world.
“The turbulent geopolitical environment forces us to look for new decisions to increase Europe’s resilience. This is an unprecedented challenge for the whole of Europe, which requires deep discussions and rationally considered, long-term solutions. Much depends on Europe’s own actions, which is why it is necessary to strengthen Europe’s economic resilience, increase its bargaining power, and strengthen international structures that would promote the well-being of Europe and the world. EU-level measures alone, such as deepening the internal market or productivity-enhancing reforms, are not enough for this. We need to address strategic vulnerabilities and dependencies in defence, technology and artificial intelligence, critical raw materials, energy, and other areas”, Vice-Minister of Finance Kristupas Vaitiekūnas emphasized.
The ECOFIN meeting will discuss how the EU, together with its partners, should act in the short and medium term to strengthen Europe’s resilience and strategic autonomy, while directing long-term changes in the global economy and geopolitics in a positive direction.
The Bruegel Research Institute will present possible geopolitical scenarios for the coming decade during the meeting. From the worst – instability of the international system, minimal cooperation – to the best, where multilateral cooperation would prevail in all areas with externalities (climate change, trade, finance, etc.). ECOFIN participants will exchange views on how they assess the scenarios presented by the Bruegel Research Institute and discuss which domestic and international policy measures could be considered the most important to achieve a favourable scenario.
