K. Vaitiekūnas ahead of the Eurogroup meeting: we need not only to stimulate economic growth, but also to maintain stable prices
In a doorstep speech ahead of the Eurogroup meeting in Cyprus, Minister of Finance Kristupas Vaitiekūnas addressed the risks of high inflation affected by the Middle East crisis and initiatives that could help people acquire their own housing.
“There are enough initiatives to help people acquire housing, but there is a lack of measures and policy solutions to help people build housing, so we agree with the Commission that new measures are needed in the supply chain as we already have enough demand-side measures”, K. Vaitiekūnas said.
When journalists asked the minister if he was worried about high inflation in Europe, the minister said it was a worrying indicator.
“Inflation in Lithuania remains high. In April, it reached about 5 %, which is much more than we expected before the conflict began. The pressure of the Middle East conflict is twofold: it increases inflation and at the same time slows down economic growth. This is one of the worst economic situations we could ever been in. Therefore, we must constantly choose between stimulating economic growth and efforts of maintaining more stable prices”, Kristupas Vaitiekūnas said.
