Lithuania allocates EUR 2 million to the programme “Grain from Ukraine”

The allocation of a EUR 2 million contribution to the humanitarian food programme “Grain from Ukraine” to contribute to ensuring food supply security at international level was approved at the Government meeting today.

"Since the beginning of the russian invasion of Ukraine, the international community has mobilized significant financial, humanitarian and military support for Ukraine, which is defending itself. As the war continues, we must collectively ensure the continuity of support; Lithuania also pays a lot of attention to this. The initiative "Grain from Ukraine" plays an important role in mitigating the negative impact of the war on the global food market and strengthening Ukraine's ability to export grain, especially to vulnerable countries. We hope that Lithuania's second contribution of EUR 2 million to this initiative will contribute to its success and also encourage other countries to join," says Minister of Finance Gintarė Skaistė.

As a result of the russian invasion of Ukraine, the export of grain from Ukraine was disrupted, which led to an increase in food prices on global markets, and especially grain prices. In response, the initiative "Grain from Ukraine" was created to maintain Ukrainian grain exports and thus contribute to global food supply security. In 2022, Lithuania also contributed EUR 2 million to this initiative.

Lithuania contributes to various initiatives supporting Ukraine through the instruments of the European Union and international financial institutions. This EUR 2 million contribution is part of Lithuania's broader strategy to support Ukraine until victory; the humanitarian, financial and military aid provided by Lithuania so far accounts for more than 1.9 % of country's GDP.
