Vice-Minister of Finance in Brussels: "Resilience and development of eastern border regions are essential for the security and future of the EU as a whole"

Vice-Minister of Finance Neringa Rinkevičiūtė – Laurinaitienė, who will attend the plenary session of the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) in Brussels, says that Lithuania strongly welcomes the Committee's clear recognition that the eastern border regions are strategic, the resilience and development of which are essential for the security and cohesion of the European Union.

"The European Union needs a comprehensive approach encompassing security, economic development, connectivity, demographic sustainability and social resilience. The challenges facing eastern border regions cannot be solved by national budgets alone or by reallocating existing EU resources. The scale of geopolitical, economic and demographic pressures requires special and well-funded European support," the Vice-Minister said.

According to her, Lithuania particularly welcomes the EESC's recommendations on the accelerated operation of the EastInvest facility, targeted support to boost competitiveness and investments that help build resilience and respond to hybrid threats.

"It is important for Lithuania that proper attention is paid to local communities, civil society, as resilience goes beyond infrastructure and defence. First of all, it concerns people, local communities and their trust in the future", Vice-Minister N. Rinkevičiūtė – Laurinaitienė notes.

According to her, an EESC opinion in favour of our country sends a clear signal at an important time, as the debate on the next Multiannual Financial Framework for 2028-2034 is intensifying.

"In cooperation with the European Commission, we are working with the European Parliament to ensure that the needs of Lithuania and other eastern border regions are properly reflected in future European policies and funding instruments", the Vice-Minister emphasizes.
