On 3 May 2016, following almost two years of negotiations, the European Union, the Republic of Iceland, the Principality of Liechtenstein and the Kingdom of Norway signed agreements on the implementation of the European Economic Area (EEA) and Norway Financial Mechanisms for the new 2014–2021 period. Under these mechanisms, €2.8 billion in funding was allocated to 15 European Union Member States with the aim of further reducing economic and social disparities within the EEA and strengthening cooperation with the donor countries. Lithuania’s allocation amounted to €117.6 million.
The agreements between the European Union and the donor countries stipulate that at least 10% of the total funds allocated to each beneficiary country must be allocated to a fund for civil society, while 1% must be allocated to a fund promoting decent work and tripartite dialogue.
During the 2014–2021 period, 2% of the allocated funds was earmarked for strengthening bilateral cooperation between Lithuania and the donor countries, and a Bilateral Cooperation Fund was established.
Lithuania was allocated:
- €51.9 million under the EEA Financial Mechanism;
- €56.7 million under the Norway Financial Mechanism.
