Forecast amount of compensations to customers affected by the storm in August increased from EUR 5 million to EUR 6 million

Minister of Finance Taurimas Valys, who attended a meeting on the consequences of the storm in the President's Office, said that the total financial impact of the storm that struck the country in August could reach about EUR 18 million, or EUR 1 million more than previously estimated. After updating the actual time limits for restoring electricity supply and the data on customers for whom the supply was not restored within 72 hours, the preliminary amount of compensation was increased to approximately EUR 6 million.

The estimated costs of the electricity network restoration remain unchanged – about EUR 10 million, an additional EUR 2 million AB Energijos skirstymo operatorius (ESO) intends to allocate on its own initiative for compensation for direct losses (food, fuel, generators, etc.). According to ESO, more than 2,000 customers have already applied for direct damages.

The financial impact of the storm is yet to be clarified as the damage assessment and network restoration work is still ongoing.

“Two times are more than enough to learn lessons, especially for businesses. From Ignitis Group and ESO, we do not expect cosmetic promises but real systemic solutions so that future emergencies can be managed more quickly, and network resilience and response to disruptions ensure minimal impact on the population”, Minister of Finance underlined.

ESO plans to start paying first compensation payments to customers on 7 September.

For customers – three different types of compensation:

  • For customers to whom electricity supply due to consequences of the storm of 22 August has not been restored within 72 hours, are entitled to legal compensation for exceeding the time limit laid down for the resumption of electricity transmission. Customers will not need to apply additionally for this compensation – ESO will calculate it individually on the basis of the electricity consumption of a particular customer and the duration of the supply disruption. This compensation and direct indemnity are separate mechanisms, therefore one payment does not reduce the other.
  • Residents to whom electricity supply due to the storm has not been restored within 72 hours, from 1 September can already apply for compensation for direct losses via ESO self-service by e-mail or ordinary mail as well as by phone +370 660 01852. Under the simplified procedure, justified direct losses of up to EUR 220 can be compensated for one object.
  • In cases where the damage does not include a simplified direct loss mechanism, residents can apply for individual indemnity, e.g. damaged devices, other assets or decayed medicaments. It is important to note that the 72-hour power outage criterion is not applicable to these applications. You can apply for them by e-mail or ordinary mail, as well as by phone +370 660 01852.
